ABSTRACT A new passive atmospheric gas sampling system is presented. With the AnaliseAr kit, it is possible to measure 16 atmospheric contaminants/pollutants simultaneously, in external, internal and/or remote environments. Each kit, made of polypropylene, contains 15 passive samplers (PS), diffusive type, of low cost and simple operation. Impregnated or adsorbent filters are used in the PS, providing measurements of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, NOx, ammonia, aldehydes and organic acids (formic and acetic), inorganic acids (hydrogen sulfide, hydrochloric and nitric acids), and volatile organic compounds: Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes (BTEX). The analysis of the fixed gases in the collection medium involves liquid chromatographic techniques such as HPLC and IC and gas chromatography (CG-FID), in addition to molecular absorption spectrophotometry. The accuracy of the PS was evaluated against continuous analyzers and other active air sampling techniques. The application of AnaliseAr in the surroundings of Baía de Todos os Santos, Bahia, presented results with good precision and accuracy, within the limit recommended by the European Union.

RESUMO Um novo sistema de amostragem passiva de gases atmosféricos é apresentado. Com o kit AnaliseAr, é possível medir 16 contaminantes/poluentes atmosféricos simultaneamente, em ambientes externos, internos e/ou remotos. Cada kit, confeccionado em polipropileno, contém 15 amostradores passivos (APs), do tipo difusivo, de baixo custo e de simples operação. Filtros impregnados ou adsorventes são usados nos APs, fornecendo medições de dióxido de enxofre, dióxido de nitrogênio, ozônio, óxidos de nitrogênio, amônia, aldeídos e ácidos orgânicos (fórmico e acético), ácidos inorgânicos (ácidos sulfídrico, clorídrico e nítrico) e compostos orgânicos voláteis — benzeno, tolueno, etilbenzeno e xilenos. A análise dos gases fixados no meio de coleta envolve técnicas de cromatografia líquida como cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência, cromatografia iônica e cromatografia gasosa, além de espectrofotometria de absorção molecular. A precisão dos APs foi avaliada contra analisadores contínuos e outras técnicas de amostragem ativa de ar. A aplicação do AnaliseAr no entorno da Baía de Todos os Santos (BA) apresentou resultados com boa precisão e exatidão, conforme o limite recomendado pela União Europeia.

RESUMO Entre os parâmetros de qualidade da água sujeitos a alterações com mudanças no fluxo do rio, a salinidade se destaca por ser intrinsicamente associada à qualidade do ecossistema. No entanto, a salinização pode causar danos irreversíveis à estrutura e função das comunidades aquáticas. Este trabalho avaliou o efeito das sucessivas reduções de vazões defluentes da barragem de Xingó na salinidade da água, no baixo trecho do rio São Francisco, Brasil. Analisou-se a salinidade a jusante da barragem, a relação entre as reduções de vazões defluentes e a salinidade, além da evolução espacial da salinidade, em função da distância dos pontos amostrais até a foz. Dados secundários de qualidade da água de 17 pontos de monitoramento foram analisados, além da realização de coletas de campo e análises em laboratório. Com as reduções das vazões defluentes, a partir de 2013, houve considerável aumento da salinidade no ponto amostral distante da foz 9 km, e com a continuidade das reduções de vazões, pontos mais afastados da foz apresentaram valores elevados de salinidade, tanto no fundo quanto na superfície. Este estudo indica valores de salinidade acima dos limites de água doce (0,5 ‰), estabelecido pela Resolução 357 do CONAMA, para consumo humano.

ABSTRACT Among the water quality parameters subjected to changes in river flow variations, salinity stands out for being intrinsically associated to ecosystem quality. Nonetheless, salinization can cause irreversible damage to the structure and functions of aquatic communities. This work evaluated the effect of successive reductions of outflow discharges from Xingó dam in water salinity in the lower stretch of the São Francisco River, Brazil. Salinity was analysed downstream of the dam, in addition to the relation between discharge reductions and salinity levels, as well as the spatial evolution of salinity in function of the distance of the sampling points from the river mouth. Secondary water quality data from 17 monitoring points were analysed, moreover, field samples and laboratory analyses were performed. With the reductions of outflow discharges, that started in 2013, there was a considerable increase in salinity in the sampling point located 9 km far from the river mouth, and with the continuation of discharge reductions, points that are farther away from the river mouth also presented high salinity values, both in the bottom and on the surface. This study indicates salinity values above the limits of fresh water (0.5 ‰), established by the CONAMA Resolution 357, for human consumption.

The passive sampling technique has been widely used for many years in the measurement of personal exposure to pollutantes in the workplace. In recent years the technique has been used too for measurements in ambient air. In the specific case of SO2 a variety of passive samplers have been described in the literature. The great number are diffusive samplers and some few are permeation samplers. They are basically of two types: badge and tube-type. However there are more than 10 variations in relation to the sampler dimensions, diffusion barriers and pollutant sorption medium. The technique trend to be very used in the near future with samplers able to reach very low detection limits, proposing a viable option for monitoring specific species at urban, regional and global scales.
